Small brush fire doused off Cactus Road in Otay Mesa

A small brush fire broke out Friday morning in an area of Otay Mesa where 500 acres were charred and a pallet business was destroyed last week.

Fire crews from several cities headed to a canyon between Cactus Road and Cactus Court about 9:40 a.m. It took firefighters a little while to figure out how to reach the flames and stretch hoses into the ravine, officials said.

First reported as a patch of fire about 40 feet across, it spread to about a quarter-acre before it was doused. No structures were threatened, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.

Firefighters got the burned area completely extinguished shortly before 11 a.m.

Department spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said a battalion chief could not determine the cause of the small blaze, which may have rekindled from nearly 500-acre brush fire on Aug. 1. Flames that day spread from Caliente Avenue east to a pallet business at the end of Cactus Court, consuming the entire inventory of wooden pallets stacked high on the property.

Another small brush fire on Thursday, a few blocks away at Brittania Boulevard and Airway Road, was sparked by a worker clearing weeds. Yet another fire on Wednesday burned through a rubbish pile on Airway Road.
